When Your Child Has ASD And ADHD Combined

My only son has ASD with ADHD. I know it sounds scary especially for those who haven’t got a clue on developmental delays and behavioral disorders. No, I didn’t take drugs when I was a teen who then led to my son having these disorders. Again, another NO – I didn’t smoke weed while I was pregnant which then made the brain cells of my son go dry. No, no, and no. I didn’t drown myself on pills which made him the way he is now. These are such ludicrous myths enveloping kids with dual diagnoses.

The real reason for why my son is such, to this day, I still don’t know. The doctor can’t even pinpoint an exact cause as to why he has ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). He just said that it could be a combination of factors like genetics and environment. I believe this to be true because my ex-husband, I am so sure of it, is an undiagnosed human being with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and Gambling Addiction Disorder. His side of the family forms the complete list as presented in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. For real! I’m not even saying this out of bitterness. They have it all, and my poor baby! His tainted blood has affected my son.

At least, ASD and ADHD can be treated with therapy and of course, a show of love and support. While others cannot understand why my son can be a bit hyperactive… okay fine, a WHOLE LOT hyperactive, well, he is my son, and I love him. As a mother, all I can do is try to help him manage his symptoms and make him aware of how he is acting and behaving. There is no cure for ASD. ADHD cannot be eliminated. But when the condition triggers, I can assist my son with trying to lessen its “weird” effects.

What Is ASD?

ASD is a wide range of disorders that refers to behavioral and developmental delays. It encompasses issues like communication, socialization, playing and sometimes, learning skills. IT IS NOT A MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER. Any child with ASD is NOT CRAZY or ABNORMAL. They possess and display specific behavior that is unique from an average kid who doesn’t have the condition.

For example, a child with ASD likes to eat specific foods and will never taste anything but what they like. They may also display speech issues, cognitive function delays, and communication deficiencies. It doesn’t mean they are stupid or unintelligent. They are just different.

What Is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder means that your child may have issues with his impulse control. He won’t be as attentive as other children, and his focus is not always in tune with how you expect him to be. The child will also be ultra-hyper. Accept that he will have running episodes inside and outside the house. He will also most likely jump many flights of stairs even if there is no need to do it. It will be a challenge to contain him, but with therapy, he will learn how to minimize his symptoms.

What I Did With My ASD+ADHD Child

I ignored all those nasty comments they made on my son.

“He is so hyper.”

“Why is he like that?”

“Is he abnormal?”

“He seriously needs help.”

“Your son is so annoying.”

I don’t care what you say about my son. He was built that way, and God made him as such, and so, I can’t complain. All I can do now as his mom is to love him unconditionally, make him go to therapy, and teach him what is right from wrong, according to God’s rules.

And so, I enrolled my son in three programs: Occupational Therapy, Educational Therapy, and Speech Therapy. He is in therapy almost every day of the week, and the expenses, it takes a toll on me. I don’t care. This is my son we’re talking about here. Even if I have to be in debt just so he can have his therapy session, well, I will without a doubt take it. He has high functioning ASD, and that means my son has a future and can carry himself if I help him now. At least when I’m gone, I know he will be alright.
